In honor of Dan Koenig’s retirement from Orland Fire Protection District he is
celebrating by giving back to Project Fire Buddies:
Engineer Dan Koenig will be retiring from Orland Fire Protection District in
May. He started as a cadet at the age of 14 in Cal Park IL leading to full time
service on the Cal Park Fire Department where he served the community for
4 years. Since then, he has served a year on the Blue Island Fire Department,
five years on Riverdale Fire Department, and finally finding is final home in
the Orland Fire Protection District where he served for twenty-seven years.
Helping his community and fellow brothers and sisters has been his way of
life. As he leaves the fire service, he would like to celebrate by giving back

friendships and trust, when there is an emergency, and the first responders
arrive there is an easy flow of communication making the situation less
stressful and scary. This can many times lead to a more positive outcome.
Project Fire Buddies brings joy to kids struggling with serious illnesses. The
first responders go big, showing up in shiny fire trucks, police cruisers, and
ambulances with sirens blasting and lights shining. No matter what the kids
are going through at the time—chemotherapy, radiation, or side effects from
their medication and treatments—these visits brightened their day. The
smiles are contagious. Project Fire Buddies keeps expanding, sponsoring
multiple children throughout the year. This year, Project Fire Buddies is
looking to sponsor many more children who could use some good cheer.
Their volunteers visit with their fire buddies at home, play games, read
books, bring gifts for special occasions, and show kids just how special they
